I write today to dispel the myth of ignorance that once again is forming around the art and science of yoga, I am referring to the article in the Sunday Herald Sun November 27, 2011
Titled “Vatican slams Harry and yoga.”
The Vatican’s chief exorcist has accused yoga and Harry Potter of being the work of the devil. The discussion with family this morning decided that Harry Potter helped children to improve their language skills realize they will need to stand up to bullies in life and also spend time in the wonderful world of their imagination. The adults who had enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series felt it dealt with the ever-present problem of finding our own uniqueness in a world that wants us to conform and how easily we can be coerced by peer and other pressures.
Father Gabriel Amorth is quoted as saying “Yoga is the devils work. you think you are doing it for stretching your mind and body but it leads to Hinduism, which is based on the false belief of reincarnation.” Dear father in the 25 years I have been teaching yoga no student has ever asked me how to convert to being a Hindu. My teacher Shanti of the http://meditationinstitute.com and http://shantiyoga.com. taught that Hinduism is non converting.
My Catholic yoga students tell me yoga deepens their religious experience.During yoga class discussion is encouraged and time is always given for questions answers and comments.
The yoga pose of Shiva Naturage is where we step on the dwarf of ignorance with one foot raising the other to step into the next moment of divinity. Entering the endless cycles of creation, maintenance destruction and rebirth. Each pose in yoga as each moment in life is firstly created from nothing/stillness, we move in to the shape in space. create it, hold and maintain, move out of it destroy it and then create a new moment, be it breath, thought or yoga pose and this must be destroyed to create anew, moving into the next magical moment.
Taken to the larger cycles of birth, death and rebirth this is also a simplistic description of reincarnation.
