As the mist came in I decided a warming meal of lentils and vegetables nestled on a bed of rice would be perfect for the evening meal. So I asked the Fella to finely cut the chilly and ginger. All went well until the phone rang and he went to answer it. Chatted for a while hung up…..then I heard from the bathroom “Quick I have rubbed my eyes and they are on fire.”
Running to the bathroom with a glass in my hand, I found him leaning over the basin with his eyes clamped shut, obviously in pain.Filling my glass with cold tap water, Tilting his head to the side I stood at the outer eye corner, so the water could flow into the eye,. “Oh that is so much better.”Round to the other eye.Back and forth until the intense stinging had stopped. The redness was now only confined to his face. The container of plain Yoghurt in the fridge brought instant relief to the stinging skin and redness quickly subsided .
Only then did I think to look on the internet for “Chilli in your eye” and the solution.Yes water the eye for 15 minutes or
weblog BlogHer recommends using the same thing you’d use to relieve that pain in your mouth: milk.
“Using one of our little drinking glasses, I was somehow able to get milk into my eye. (Don’t ask me to demonstrate.) I also did a fairly good job of making the milk run all the way down my face and neck, but whatever.
Instant relief. I stood there, blinking milkily in unbelief. Could I really have just gone from that much pain to practically no pain with just a few swishes of milk? Indeed I had.”
If you feel your hands burning and want to get the pepper oils off before touching your eyes, washing your hands with soap and water won’t help.” Weblog The Kitchn notes that oil-based products, however, will:
Olive oil! When the pain became unbearable, I rubbed a tablespoon of olive oil all over my hands for about a minute, then washed them with soap and water. The olive oil helped to dissolve the capsaicin in the jalapeno – which is more soluble in oil than in water – so it could be rinsed away.”
Dinner _well the lentils a little under cooked, rice a little overcooked but at least he could see to enjoy it.
